After the success of "Still Life" Amongst Myselves realised that he was headed in the right direction; a direction which is constantly challenging, trying to break away from the normal. So with this in mind he set to work on what would later be titled "Sacred Black", a journey influenced by fifteenth century religious persecution, astrophysics, the desolation of a sleeping city at 5am and the classic Martin Denny piece 'Quiet Village'.
Released in 2003, "Sacred Black" is a continuation of a journey starting with "Still Life"; a story expressing diverse emotions - meditation, tension, subtlety, torment and persecution, imagination and celebration.
In 2005 Roberts started doing Sound Design on short films and found it to be a great source of inspiration for his work as Amongst Myselves. Roberts said "I caught up with some old friends from Art School who wanted me back on the team, as it were.". The role he took on was not unlike his work with Amongst Myselves. It involved recording and realising sound environments. "It was great to be under someone else's direction for a change." said Roberts. Roberts has continued composing for film to this day with 10 films now under his belt and sees this as another outlet for his work.
Australian ambient radio program, Ultima Thule, released its first compilation of ambient artists from around the world, "Chasing the Dawn: Ultima Thule Ambient - Volume 01" in the middle of 2006. The CD contains tracks from such greats as Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Tim Story and Numina as well as Amongst Myselves. "I feel so honored to have been asked by George Cruikshank, producer of Ultima Thule, to be alongside all these great influences." said Roberts. Ultima Thule can be heard across Australia on 2MBS, 5MBS, ArtSound FM and via the Community Radio Network.
During the making of Auburn Silhouette, Amongst Myselves spent a year in a small studio near London, England. "It was a great opportunity to be able to pull up roots and move there. I recorded "Munstead Heath" while staying near a small village in the Surrey countryside - very picturesque though I'm not sure that's what is expressed in that track" said Roberts. This also gave him direct access to the UK arts scene which resulted in commissions to create sound for two art-dance pieces for artist Laura Challiss.
